Fidelity matches the question
A rough sketch answers layout questions; a clickable flow answers usability ones. We choose the lowest fidelity that still tests the assumption, so we spend effort learning rather than polishing.

Put it in front of users early
Internal opinions are no substitute for watching a real user struggle. Five quick sessions on a prototype surface the issues that would otherwise cost weeks of rework after launch.
Throwaway work that saves money
Prototypes are meant to be discarded. The few days spent building one routinely save weeks of engineering aimed at the wrong target. Cheap learning is the highest-return work we do.
